Why Metadata Matters

Whenever you capture an image, digital cameras and smartphones silently append technical and personal information to the file. This EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) data is incredibly useful for organizing photo libraries, but it poses a severe privacy risk when shared openly.

By uploading an untreated photo to a personal blog, forum, or email, you may unknowingly broadcast your home address (via GPS coordinates), the device you use, and exactly when the photo was captured.

Honest Limitations

We believe in transparent security. Here is what ExifScrub cannot do:

  • Visual Privacy: We cannot remove visually identifying information from the photo itself (e.g., street signs, reflections, faces).
  • Proprietary RAW formats: ExifScrub officially supports JPEG, PNG, and WebP. Highly specialized camera RAW formats are not supported.
  • Server-Side Processing: Because everything runs locally to protect you, older devices or browsers with low memory might struggle to process very large files (e.g., 20MB+ panormas).
